Mona Lisa smiles
Is she smiling at us?
Perhaps because she knows how the two very different landscapes to the right and left behind her in the picture are connected? Leonardo da Vinci hides this enigmatic part of his painting behind the portrait of a seriously smiling woman. Full of irony, da Vinci shows the people of his time what they most want to see – themselves, in front of nature and beautiful women, of course. Like a magician, da Vinci uses Mona Lisa, his seductive assistant, to deliberately distract the audience – and he does so with enigmatic, focused perfection. I conceal the connecting element between the incompatible abstract halves of the images in my following series behind minimalist monochrome colour fields. I call it ‘Mona Lisa Smiles’.
