11 Man in the Moon
Over the years that I have lived here, anonymous children from the neighborhood have kicked footballs onto my first-floor balcony while I was away. These footballs come from girls and boys in the legendary Buttmannstraße, where I live and work. The district of Berlin with the hopeful name WEDDING was dominated by many children, poverty, and, for a long time, immigrants from Turkey, Arab countries, and war children from the former Yugoslavia. The footballs give us a unique insight into the lives of Berlin's children on the dark side of the moon.
For several years now, Wedding, and Buttmannstraße in particular, has been undergoing social change. Since the merger of the very different districts of Berlin-Mitte and Berlin-Wedding into one large Berlin-Mitte, the change has become obvious. The balls tell of the old days here in this place.
