The I about the Self
The 11 large format triptychs were created in three studio apartments by Henry Landers in Berlin. Models for him were medieval painters such as Hans Holbein and Rogier van der Weyden. Landers developed his own symbolic language that brings together vanitas and portraiture. Each of these topics involved Landers in a lengthy process of discovering the relevant places. At the end of the process there were always completed insights that each triptych visualized to the outside and which could only be implemented at the respective location.
Although staged, they are authentic. In his essay "The Self over the Self," Landers describes the processes of creation.
